It’s time for Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act
In 2013, the Supreme Court issued a devastating 5-4 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which ruled the VRA’s preclearance protections no longer necessary. The ruling enabled Republican states to pass aggressive voter suppression laws, explicitly targeting historically disenfranchised communities of color.
We cannot let our country regress to the era of Jim Crow.
House Democrats have just introduced the Voting Rights Advancement Act, or HR4: A plan to protect voters and take down a rigged system. This critical act would restore the Justice Department’s ability to prevent voting discrimination and protect voters across the country. It’s time to remind Congress that voting is not a privilege -- it’s an inalienable right.
